Japan scrambled jets more than 100 times to intercept Chinese spy planes, general says
Gen. Hajime Massaki, Japan's chairman of the Joint Staff Committee, said JASDF has scrambled fighter jets a record 107 times this year to intercept suspected Chinese spy planes approaching Japanese air space.
There was only 13 scrambles last year and it marked an eightfold increase. Most of the scrambles occurred over the East China Sea where Chinese Y-8MPA maritime patrol aircraft are believed to be conducting surveillance missions. The two countries are feuding over gas deposits and an island chain in the area.
