Panel tries to save Kennedy The U.S. House Armed Services Committee has thwart Sen. John W. Warner, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, bid to retire USS John F. Kennedy.

The committee wanted the Navy to maintain the current number of aircraft carriers.
