T-3A fleet will be destroyed
The USAF has decided to scrap its fleet of 110 T-3A Firefly aircraft after finding them redundant.
The British planes were grounded in 1997 after three Air Force Academy cadets and their three instructors died in separate crashes in consecutive years.
The Air Force considered selling the planes for parts or refurbishing them to FAA standards for resale to the public but decided to junk them as it was cost prohibitive.
The process will start on Monday and is expected to complete by Sept. 25.
