Italian Spartans lead the race to be Defence's heavy-lifters Australian defense sources say a decision to buy the twin-engine C-27J to replace RAAF's ageing DHC-4 Caribou could come as early as mid-year.

The aircraft is expected to be delivered from 2010-11.
