Local fighter unit's World War II heroism spotlighted
Recent research by historian David Aiken says studies of U.S. and Japanese military reports of the events of the Pearl Harbor attack prove that 2nd Lt. John Leroy Dains from the 47th Fighter Squadron scored the first kill.

Dains was shot down and killed during his third sortie that day by nervous U.S. gunners at his own field.
