US military plans for new UAV to stay airborne for five years
DARPA's VULTURE (Very-high altitude, Ultra-endurance, Loitering Theatre Unmanned Reconnaissance Element) program plans to build an unmanned aerial vehicle that can stay airborne for up to five years.
The requirements for the aircraft are to carry a 1,000lb, 5kW airborne payload for an uninterrupted period exceeding five years with a 99%+ on-station reliability.
