Gates say F136 doesn’t meet performance specs

U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said the F136 engine developed by General Electric/Rolls-Royce doesn’t and probably will not meet the performance standards required of it.

Gates added that the engine would cost at least another $2.9 billion to develop.

A spokesman from GE has refuted both claims.

  1. Has everyone forgotten that the F135 DOES NOT meet the spec? In 2007 the USG had to agree to relax the engine spec requirements so that F135 development could continue without killing the F-35 program schedule. And what about the fact that AFRL and P&W have been concurrenlty developing an engine to replace the F135 that will actually meet spec? The F135 was a bait and switch- PW knew the F119 core would never work in the F-35. The REAL alternate engine is the secret AFRL PW development of the F135 replacement.
