A new launch module might be needed for the SM-3 IIB interceptor to allow the new missile to grow beyond the confines of the Aegis MK41 vertical launcher.
Currently, existing SM-3 missiles are limited to a diameter of 21 inches but the Missile Defense Agency is being practical and will allow the diameter to grown in order for the interceptor to go farther and faster to make a kill.
