Fire Scout that went for joyride nearly intercepted by NORAD

A Fire Scout UAV that went out of control on Aug. 2 was nearly intercepted by NORAD as it flew towards Washington DC.

U.S. Navy Adm. James Winnefeld Jr., head of Northern Command, said his commanders were closed to scrambling F-16s when operators were able to reestablish control with the drone.

Winnefeld also told reporters during a Defense Writers Group meeting that he is considering the potential need for a lighter, lower-flying aircraft for large, outdoor events.
