U.S. lawmaker wants Army to arm its medevac helicopters

Rep. Todd Akin, a senior member of the U.S. House Armed Services Committee, is asking the Army to arm its medevac helicopters in Afghanistan just like its Air Force and Special Operations counterparts are doing.

Currently, Army medevac helicopters are not armed and painted with a red cross to adhere to the Geneva Convention. Sometimes, flights are delayed as an armed escort needs to be found in order for evacuation flights to be carried out.
