Maj. Gen. Zhu Chenghu of China’s National Defense University told Reuters on the sidelines of a panel discussion on nuclear disarmament that Beijing may need to modernize its nuclear arsenal to respond to the U.S. Missile defense system.
China “will have to modernise its nuclear arsenal” because the deployment of a missile defence system “may reduce the credibility of its nuclear deterrence,” Zhu told the seminar.
