Catastrophic engine failure behind F-15E crash in May

A Air Combat Command investigation into the crash of a F-15E in May could not determine the reason why the right engine of the jet caught fire in mid-air.

Investigators found that the fire was due to a rare ignition of the titanium components inside the right engine.

While the pilot was able to shut down the engine and stabilize the aircraft, he soon lost control as the hydraulics system failed and he lost all electrical power.
