Yo-yo Tanking

The F/A-18 Super Hornet in the U.S. Navy now carries only the centerline refueling pod and 14,000 pounds of fuel to refuel aircraft returning from their mission.

Prior to 2009, the tanker will launch with one centerline refueling tank and four auxiliary tanks, totaling about 28,000 pounds of fuel. But it will only have 5,000 pounds of fuel to refuel other aircraft due to drag and weight issues. The new SMART configuration can still deliver up to 5,000 pounds of fuel per tanker but the jet must lands within about 20 minutes.
