Saab to install Wide Area Multilateration System at Joint Base Lewis – McChord

Joint Base Lewis-McChord is enhancing the surveillance of low flying aircraft in its training area by having Saab installed its Wide Area Multilateration (WAM) system.

JBLM hopes to avoid a repeat of a Dec. 2011 crash when two helicopters collided in mid-air in the training area.

Saab’s system uses sensors to triangulate aircraft location based on transponder signals. This will allow air traffic controllers to monitor helicopters that fly below radar coverage.
