U.S. Army Apache pilots switch training from counterinsurgency to defeating near-peer enemy

With the war winding down in Afghanistan, U.S. Army Apache attack helicopter pilots have switched their training from fighting insurgents to defeating a near-peer enemy.

During a virtual training exercise at the Aviation Combined Arms Tactical Trainer on Hunter Army Airfield, pilots had to fly deep into enemy territory using nap-of-earth flying tactics to destroy enemy targets.

According to Chief Warrant Officer 4 Jason Freeze, brigade Aviation Mission Survivability officer, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd CAB, the difficult part of the training exercise is to regain back the targeting skills need to track targets.
