The Office of Naval Research is building a ground-based laser weapon for the U.S. Marine Corps.
The Ground-Based Air Defense Directed Energy On-the-Move program (GBAD) will be installed on light tactical vehicles such as the Humvee and Joint Light Tactical Vehicle.
The system will step from a 10kW laser to a 30kW laser. It will eventually be ready for field testing in 2016.
