SM-3 intercepts ballistic missile over North Atlantic Ocean for the first time

The first ballistic missile interception by a SM-3 interceptor in the North Atlantic Ocean took place on Oct. 20. USS Ross fired the missile which intercepted a short-range Terrier Orion ballistic missile target. The cues for the firing solution came from Dutch and Spanish warships.

Two anti-ship cruise missiles were launched simultaneously as well. One of them was intercepted by a SM-2 fired from USS The Sullivans.
