Luftwaffe’s Tornado detachment at Holloman AFB might cease operations in 2019

The German Air Force has a detachment of Tornado fighter-bombers at Holloman Air Force Base in the United States. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the German Air Force Flying Training Center at Holloman. During the annual New Year’s reception by the center, the commanding officer of the center told the crowd that the contract to keep the Tornados at Holloman might not be renewed this year.

The contract is due for renewal this year as the current contract will expire in 2019. Col. Stephan Breidenbach said keeping the small number of jets at Holloman “is a big logistical challenge and very cost intensive.”

Therefore, the Chief of Staff of the German Air Force has recommended to consolidate all Tornodo air wings in Germany. But Breidenbach added that the Ministry of Defense will make the final call.
