The Indonesian military is keen to expand its presence beyond the island of Java and its chief, Gen. Gatot Nurmantyo, mentioned that it is important for the air force to have bases outside Java.

Gatot added that on Java, there are three air bases and the high concentration has affected commercial air traffic as they have to be routed away from the bases.
