Safran wants to boost M88’s thrust to 20,000 lbs

Safran’s CEO, Philippe Petitcolin, said he is keen to boost the thrust of the M88 turbofan engine to 20,000 lbs but he added that the idea has not been discussed with Dassault.

Explaining his rationale, Petitcolin said the output of the engine had remained unchanged since two decades ago but the Rafale has evolved to become heavier.

He did add that his firm is “in discussion with the relevant authorities” on the upgrade.
