AI running on a Raspberry Pi beats retired USAF fighter pilot at dogfights

An Artificial Intelligence software, dubbed ALPHA, challenged retired U.S. Air Force fighter pilot Col. Gene Lee in several dogfights and the machine emerged as the winner each time.

ALPHA, a product of University of Cincinnati (UC) and defense company Psibernetix, runs on a small, affordable computer known as Raspberry Pi.

The press release from says the AI “consistently outperformed a baseline computer program previously used by the Air Force Research Lab for research. In other words, it defeated other AI opponents.”

As for Col. Lee, who graduated from the U.S. Fighter Weapons School, dogfighting against ALPHA in hours-long sessions left him going home “feeling washed out” and “tired, drained and mentally exhausted.”
