The U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory has selected Northrop Grumman for its Self-Protect High Energy Laser Demonstrator (SHiELD) Turret Research in Aero-Effects (STRAFE) program.

The Self-Protect High Energy Laser Demonstrator (SHiELD) pod aims to better protect fourth-generation fighters by helping to destroy incoming missiles using its on board laser. Northrop Grumman will develop and deliver an advanced beam control system that will go into the pod.
