Japan to choose between THAAD or Aegis Ashore

Tokyo is expected to set aside some money to fund a study on whether to buy the Terminal High Altitude Area Defence (THAAD) system or Aegis Ashore in an attempt to boost its ballistic missile defense capability.

Three sources who spoke to Reuters said money will be allocated to improve the PAC-3 air defense system as well.

However, these measures will not have any impact in the short term as rolling out a new air defense system takes time and upgrades to the PAC-3 cannot be done immediately as the production lines are busy with orders.
