Experts warn Pentagon that China, Russia are ahead in hypersonic weapon research

An unclassified report produced by a blue-ribbon panel of experts for the U.S. Air Force Studies Board at the National Academies of Science warns the Pentagon that both China and Russia are ahead in the race to develop hypersonic weapons.

Mark J. Lewis, chairman of the panel that produced the report, urged the Pentagon to accelerate work on both offensive and defensive means to counter such weapons could challenge America’s “tenets of global vigilance, reach, and power.”
