South Africa employing Gripens to track rhinoceros poachers

At the annual meeting of the Swedish Air Force Fan Club in Paris on Jun. 18, the commanding officer of South African Air Force 2 Squadron told attendees that his unit’s Gripens are tasked with searching for rhinoceros poachers near the Zimbabwe border.

Lt Col Josias Mashaba said the jet will use its Rafael Litening III targeting pod to scan the area at night and direct wildlife rangers to the poachers’ camps.

The Gripens are not being utilized solely for such missions and are tasked with other duties as well.
