Two days before Christmas, 1944, 2nd Lt. Charles E. Carlson was shot down and killed in his P-47 over Europe. His remains were recovered last year and during his funeral service on Aug. 4 at the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, his unit – the 62nd Fighter Squadron – flew a missing man formation fly-over with four F-35As.
