The Pentagon has confirmed that two B-52 bombers took off from the British outpost in Diego Garcia and flew across the Indian Ocean to conduct training in the South China Sea.

The training flight took place on Jun. 5. The bombers were deployed to Diego Garcia from Andersen Air Force Base in Guam a day earlier.
CNN reports that the training took place close to artificial islands occupied by China.
