60th anniversary of AIM-9 Sidewinder’s combat debut over China

The AIM-9 Sidewinder air-to-air missile made its combat debut on Sept. 24, 1958 over Wenzhou, China.

Four Republic of China Air Force (RoCAF) F-86Fs armed with the GAR-8, early designation for the AIM-9B, shot down four People’s Republic of China Air Force (PLAAF) MiG-17s during a mission to provide cover for a RoCAF RF-84F. A total of six GAR-8s were fired during the battle. Another five PLAAF MiG-17s were shot down by M3 Browning machine guns from F-86s.

A top secret weapon at that time, a batch of GAR-8 missiles and their launch rails were delivered to Taiwan just a month earlier on Aug. 18.
