The Mainichi says Washington is considering the request. Japan is also hoping that the arrangement can eventually be made permanent after the Games are over, it has been seeking to convert the military airport into dual civilian-military use since 2003.

However, the United States has been reluctant to do so, under the current proposal, only athletes from the U.S. and its allies will be considered to use Yokota Air Base.
