The 64-year-old runway at Little Rock Air Force Base is being replaced with a new one, Air Force Installation and Mission Support Center has announced.
The current 12,000-foot-long runway also has a bow in the middle which prevents pilots from see the other end of the runway. This will be flatten and the new concrete runway will be able to support other aircraft such as the C-5, KC-10, C-17 and KC-135.
The first of three project phases begins in October and includes replacing the landing zone and the center taxiway. Phases 2 and 3 will focus on construction on the East and West portions of the runway and installing new lighting and navigational aid systems, the press release said.
The Air Force Installation and Mission Support Center’s Detachment 9, 772nd Enterprise Sourcing Squadron and 19th Civil Engineering Squadron will be executing the project.
