The jets are expected to be delivered in summer and the contract includes spare parts and training of the military personnel tasked with operating the aircraft.

Defence Department’s deputy minister, Jody Thomas, explained that the contract was sole-sourced as jets are similar to existing Challengers in service with the Royal Canadian Air Force. The older aircraft also does not meet new International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards for operating in civilian airspace.
