A news report in Japan quoted a Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) official as saying that the upgraded F-15JSI (Japan Super Interceptor) will be a multirole fighter.

The anonymous official said that in the past, the Mitsubishi F-2 fighter was given anti-ship and ground attack roles while the F-15 was an air superiority fighter. Now the F-15 will become a multirole aircraft just like the F-35. The pilots will learn to operate in the new environment as well.
