RTAF F-5 crash was due to bird strike

Last Friday’s crash of an F-5 fighter in Chai Badan district of Lop Buri province was caused by a collision with a large bird, according to Royal Thai Air Force spokesman Air Vice Marshal Prapas Sornchaidee.

The pilot, Wing Commander Suthimet Ouamdee, who suffered injuries after ejecting from the plane, wrote to his wife telling her that he had to eject from the fighter after something struck and broke the cockpit windshield, causing blood to splash everywhere.

As the plane was traveling at an estimated 1,000 kilometers per hour, air and debris were blown through the damaged windshield and it was impossible to save the aircraft.

Inspectors from the RTAF will continue to investigate the cause of the crash, Sornchaidee added.
