IDF: I Do Fly; I Do Fight; I Don't Fail
During Sunday's ceremony on the 20th anniversary of the IDF fighter, Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou said the jet was labeled as "I Don't Fly" in its earlier part of life.
However, it has matured over the years and should now be called: "I Do Fly; I Do Fight and I Don't Fail."
20th anniversary of IDF fighter
Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou attended a ceremony on Sunday to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the IDF fighter. The name Goshawk that was given by disgraced ex-President Chen Shui-bian was missing from the F-CK-1C aircraft.
IDF upgrade decision next month
Taiwan's lawmakers will only decide on upgrading the indigenous IDF fighter jet at the end of August, a Ministry of National Defense (MND) spokeswoman said Saturday. The Legislative Yuan had on Friday passed a resolution to stop the project immediately.
Ministry denies Cabinet halted fighter upgrades
Taiwan's Vice Minister of National Defense Lin Yu-pao has dismissed media reports that it had halted plans to upgrade the IDF fighter to F-CK-1C/D standard. Lin said the government's position on the project has not changed.
Taiwan halts plan to upgrade self-made IDF warplanes
Taiwan's cabinet has told the military to halt Hsiang Chan (Wings Spread) Project in 2009. The project was to upgrade the air force's indigenous IDF fighter. The cabinet said that it will still allocate the 2009 budget of 1 billion Taiwan dollars for the project but the RoCAF must use the fund for other purposes.

The RoCAF has decided not to adopt the conformal tanks on the F-CK-1C/D fighter is plans to upgrade the existing fleet goes ahead. Other plans to improve the ground attack capability of the IDF remains however.

The upgrade of IDF fighters to F-CK-1C/D standard will still be needed even if Washington approves the sale of F-16C/Ds to Taiwan. AIDC is expected to upgrade eight aircraft next year.

There was a political controversy at the Singapore Air Show as AIDC was forced by the organizers to remove the word Taiwan and the Republic of China flag from its booth. A DVD showing Taiwan President Chen Shui-bian naming the F-CK-1C/D as Goshawk was asked to be removed as well.

Two Taiwanese opposition lawmakers have called for the government to fully upgrade all its F-CK-1 A/B fighters to the latest F-CK-1 C/D standard. They said the government should not be wasting their efforts in getting F-16C/Ds but to improve the IDF to secure jobs for the local industry.

AIDC's dual-seat upgraded F-CK-1 IDF fighter has made its maiden flight Mar. 15. It was escorted by an AT-3 trainer. The aircraft took off at 10:08 and the flight lasts 30 minutes.

Aircraft 10005 took off at around 2:55pm accompanied by another IDF fighter from Chingchungkang airbase. It did not retract its gear during this flight. Both aircraft headed out west towards the Taiwan Strait after take off and returned to land later at 3:15pm.
The upgraded fighter will have the ability to carry conformal fuel tanks to increase its range. These new fuel tanks are still undergoing development and will only be ready for testing early next year.
The new IDF can also carry four Sky Sword 2 air-to-air missiles, up from two.
