A five-year permit given to the U.S. Navy by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration on the use of sonar buoys in the Pacific Ocean expires this year. The Navy application to renew the permit seeks to expand the sonar training exercises.
The Navy wants to deploy up to 720 sonobuoys at least 12 nautical miles off the coasts of Washington, Oregon and Northern California, according to the report by Associated Press.
