A student pilot managed to land his F-16C, #89-2034, after the jet lost half of its right wing during a mid-air collision with his instructor’s jet. The instructor ejected safely.

The investigation board blamed the student pilot for the mishap. Both aircraft were in a formation in a simulated dogfight with another F-16. However, the student failed to inform the flight lead that he had lost visual with him. Both jets collided into each other while pursuing the third fighter.
