With its big tires and high mounted engines, the A-10 is the only combat fighter in the U.S. Air Force that can operate out of an austere landing strip.

The 354th Expeditionary Fighter Squadron and 321st Special Tactics Squadron traveled to Nowe Miasto, Poland recently to practice landing and take-offs from an unprepared old runway.
The cracked, uneven asphalt runway there allow pilots to closely simulate landing conditions in a deployed environment.
