The attack by 10 F-15 air superiority fighters on the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) headquarters in Hammam al-Shatt, near Tunis, Tunisia, on Oct. 1, 1985 was the longest air raid ever flown by the IAF.
Six F-15s 106 from the “Edge of the Spear” Squadron and four from the 102 “Knights of the Twin Tail” Squadron took off from Tel Nof airbase while loaded with GBU-15s.
Col. (Res.) Micky (Michael) Lev, who was then the commanding officer of 102 Squadron revealed that a PLO training camp in Aden, Yemen was initially targeted but 24 hours before the attack, it was decided to strike the PLO headquarters in Tunisia instead.
The attack was nearly called off as the strike package approached the target. A line of clouds was obstructing the pilots’ view but it dissipated as the jets near the Tunisia coast.
