Japan to form new air wing in Okinawa using 2 F-15J squadrons

For the first time in 50 years, the Japan Air Self Defense Force (JASDF) will form a new air wing. The Ninth Air Wing will be based at Naha airport in Okinawa.

304 Squadron will be redeployed from Tsuiki Airbase to Naha to form two F-15J fighter squadrons for the new wing. A total of 40 F-15Js will eventually be deployed in Okinawa.

The news was announced by Defense Minister Nakatani on Jan. 26 and the order takes effect on Jan. 31.
