A study to find the aircraft to replace the A-10 has been initiated by the U.S. Air Force and the study will look at whether a new clean-sheet design is required or existing aircraft such as the AT-6 or A-29 can fulfill the role.

A derivative of the T-X might meet the need but a senior officer cautioned that the T-X program won’t be ready until 2024 and the replacement has to be found before 2022, the deadline set by the flying branch to retire the A-10.
