A recording of Lt. Cmdr. Edward Lin’s military pretrial hearing held on Apr. 8 revealed that he had actually given classified information to an FBI informant posing as a Taiwan official.

Lin met the informant from Aug. 25 to Sept. 9 of 2015 and he was arrested on Sept. 11. He confessed to being a spy during a two-day interrogation at the Honolulu International Airport.
