The U.S. Air Force has acquired the Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System (APKWS) laser-guided rockets for its A-10s and F-16s operating in Afghanistan and Iraq under an urgent field requirement.
To fulfill the urgent need, the service will acquire its initial supply of rockets out of the current Navy inventory.
The U.S. Marine Corps was the first to field the weapon in those theaters on the AV-8B. The Army follow suit last year by arming its Apaches with the APKWS.
