Japan’s MIM-104 PAC-3 air defense missile systems will be upgraded with Missile Segment Enhancement (MSE) interceptors starting from next year in order to enhance the air defense coverage during the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.

The new interceptors are needed in order to better counter North Korea’s Musudan ballistic missile, an anonymous source told Reuters.
A spokesman for Japan’s Defence Ministry however said “nothing has been decided” on the PAC-3 upgrade.
