The four three-pronged structures that appeared on Taiwan-occupied Taiping Island is probably meant to support a AN/TPS-117 air surveillance radar that Taipei intends to deploy later, United Daily News reports.
The clues can be found in tender documents that the National Chung-Shan Institute of Science & Technology published in July. The institute has requested to boost the electrical power available on the island and to lay cables that will transmit L-band signals.
If true, the deployment of the American-made radar will allow Taiwan to monitor air traffic of Chinese artificial islands nearby.
