India’s Defense Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) revealed that a contract was awarded to French engine manufacturer Snecma to help the former’s Gas Turbine and Research Establishment (GTRE) complete the develop of the Kaveri turobfan engine.

The French company will have to get the engine ready for flights on the Tejas light combat aircraft by 2018. GTRE has been struggling for years to reduce the weight of the powerplant and boost its thrust.
