The unfortunate incident started when the Virginia Beach Police Department responded to a hit-and-run incident one mile away from Gate 2 of the base. They found damage to the gate while canvassing the scene and notified base security.
NAS Oceana security fond the sailor at the scene. He later died at the hospital after getting shot.
