The island had wanted to buy 42 pods and had earmarked $160 million to buy them. However, development costs had eaten up the budget and Taiwan can only afford to buy 12 pods.
The purchase of the electronic warfare pods was part of the Foreign Military Sale (FMS) package offered to Taiwan in September 2011. Taiwan was allowed to modernized 145 F-16A/Bs to the V-model.
