SMART-L MM tracks ballistic missile from more than 1,500km away

A ballistic missile fired during Exercise Formidable Shield 2017 on Sept. 25 was tracked by Thales’ SMART-L MM radar system from a test tower more than 1,500km away.

The detection and tracking started once the target appeared over the horizon in Hengelo. The tracking was carried out over 300 seconds.

The SMART-L MM radar will be mounted on four Royal Netherlands Navy De Zeven Provinciën class frigates from next year.
