American aerospace company AeroVironment has entered into a joint venture with Japan’s Softbank to develop solar-powered high-altitude long-endurance (HALE) unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) for commercial operations.

Named HAPSMobile, the Japanese corporation is 95 percent funded and owned by SoftBank with AeroVironment taking a small stake.
