Graham Warwick of Aviation Week has more details on Dynetics’ winning bid for Darpa’s Gremlins program.
The roll-on docking system is lowered on a pylon from the open cargo ramp of a C-130 flying at up to 150 kt. The unmanned air vehicle is captured by a drouge-like device and secured by braces on the docking system. The whole thing is then lifted back into the cargo bay and stowed.
Chief engineer of the Gremlins program from Dynetics says ground and flight tests of the system were carried out using a C-130A during Phase 2.
Excellent! This should be a primer for those “we can’t” automate A/A basket/probe refueling!
Ha!
